Dinnertime: new works by Janet Barnes
from Friday, March 1 6:00PM -
Saturday, March 23 8:00PM
Join us next Friday, March 1st from 6-9pm for the opening reception of Dinnertime featuring new works by Janet Barnes exploring the impact that dinnnertime has on relationships in families and the role it plays at common culture we all share in this society. It is an honor to have her as a featured artist along with more women artist in March and to celebrate the gallery's 10th anniversary with this returning artist. Janet will give a discussion of her work (reminiscing the beautiful style of Jacob Lawrence) from 7-8pm. Dinnertime Series (1990-2013) There are three main reasons why my " Dinnertime Series " is my favorite collection of artwork. First of all it is positive and inspiring. Just think about all the childhood or family memories that come from your dinning room table. I take these memories and place them with a visual passion. Brilliant colors from smooth pastels mixed with acrylic paint added just where I believe it is needed. All comes together as reason number two. The third reason this series is so special is because the passion overwhelms me as I'm creating each one. I love my music blasting as my fingernail scratches in the last details that are drawn in the likeness of a chair, which I have sat in at Dinnertime with my family or friends. Everything about this series equals the goodness of people, the power of a families love. The value that is priceless, Dinnertime.

Richard Mayhew: Sketchbook Closing Reception and Lecture
from Saturday, February 23 3:00PM -
Saturday, February 23 5:00PM
Join us for a special presentation in celebration of Black History month and closing reception for Richard Mayhew. Richard Mayhew will present a lecture series on the Spiral Group and a slide presentation on the works of Romare Bearden at Joyce Gordon Gallery . Diverging from his landscapes to introduce a collection of brilliantly rendered drawings and sketches titled "Sketchbook", Mayhew made this first ever debut of work four months at Evolve the Gallery in Sacramento, CA. This exhibit has made its way to Oakland at the Joyce Gordon Gallery, which provides an incredible opportunity to not only view Mr. Mayhew?s newly created drawings and sketches, but also engage him in a personal dialogue about his work. About the Spiral Group: Spiral was a collective of African-American artists with founding members, Romare Bearden, Richard Mayhew, Charles Alston, and more on July 5, 1963. It has since become the name of an exhibition, Spiral: Perspectives on an African-American Art Collective. The Spiral group was relatively ignored in much traditional art history since its demise. But interest in the group was rekindled by a group exhibition of the collective in Birmingham and New York in 2010-2011, and the associated catalogs. The exhibition looks at the way the Spiral collective came into its own during a period of American history full of unrest, and the varied visual responses of African-American artists. www.joycegordongallery.com

Richard Mayhew: Sketchbook
from Friday, February 1 6:00PM -
Thursday, February 28 9:00PM
Please join us next Friday, February 1st from 6 - 9pm for the opening reception of "Sketchbook" by acclaimed painter, Richard Mayhew who will talk about the his new drawing and sketch series. Front Gallery Born in Amityville, NY, the acclaimed American Painter of Expressionistic landscapes, Richard Mayhew is particularly admired for his exploration of the use of color. Inspired by the natural environment, Mayhew uses color, space, and form to express what he has called "a universal space with the illusion of time." Mayhew told American Visions writer Lizzetta LeFalle-Collins that "My art is based on a feeling of music and mood and sensitivity and the audio responses of sound and space. I want the essence of the inner soul to be on the canvas." Diverging from these landscapes to introduce a collection of brilliantly rendered drawings and sketches titled "Sketchbook", Mayhew made this first ever debut of work four months at Evolve the Gallery in Sacramento, CA. This exhibit now makes its way to Oakland at the Joyce Gordon Gallery, which provides an incredible opportunity to not only view Mr. Mayhew's newly created drawings and sketches, but also engage him in a personal dialogue about his work. www.joycegordongallery.com

Dichotomy Of Art
from Friday, January 4 6:00PM -
Sunday, January 27 5:00PM
Opening Reception: First Friday, January 4, 6-9pm Artist Talk: First Friday, January 4th 7-8pm Lisa Alonzo Jonathan Blair James Gayles Ruth Tabancay Joyce Gordon Gallery presents "The Dichotomy of Art", an attempt to examine the interdisciplinary practices among artists, not just of their interchangeable artistic media but also the cross sections of their careers. In 1976, an art program at Columbia College of Chicago was created to examine and explore the interdisciplinary use of techniques from across the fine, performing and multimedia arts. This diverse media approach previously existed as pedagogies of multi-academia challenged each perpetual field of study, usually for the purpose of reaching a mutual task. This later became a method for art students to expand their use of diverse techniques that explore and push the boundaries for new future terrains of art. "The Dichotomy of Art" pushes these boundaries even further by examining the artwork of four predominantly Bay Area artists whose interdisciplinary practice involve tools commonly used by professionals in the white and blue-collar sector of society that consist of commercial graphics, culinary arts and microbiology. Occupy: The Plein Air Story
from Friday, November 2 10:00AM -
Saturday, December 1 5:00PM
November 2 - Dec 1st, 2012 Opening Reception: First Friday, November 2nd, 6-9pm Poetry from the OccupyAnthology.org: Saturday, November 3rd, 3-5pm Panel Discussion: November 24th Anthony Holdsworth, Jessica Jirsa and John Paul Marcelo with guest artists, Tomye and Rick Rocamora Joyce Gordon Gallery presents ?Occupy: The Plein Air Story?, an exhibition marking the anniversary and historical events of the Occupy Movement from the perspective of three Bay Area plein air painters. More than two years ago, movements around the world challenging the economic inequalities of a ?Pareto Principle? like system resulted in what we now call the Occupy Movement. As major movements emerged in San Francisco and Oakland, Ca., three plein air painters entered the scene to bear witness to these local movements with a synoptic view on canvas; an organic step away from the commonly respected graphic design posters and photographs that normally offer a visual account of social and political struggles. Their painted stories reflect an onerous and yet more intimate viewpoint from which to understand the voices of the encamped movement. They gained notable press recognition for their Jim Pollock (Vietnam War Combat Artist) approach to recording history.
